Toni Scott's American History 101

Sophia Louisa Projects at Phantom Galleries LA/Miracle Mile is pleased to present Toni Scott's American History 101. Ms. Scott was recently awarded a grant from the Annenberg Foundation to create a solo, inaugural exhibition for the Gallery of Discovery at the California African American Museum of Art[1] based on her Bloodline series. In June of this year she was also awarded Best Artist 2010 for her series Black Indians by the Semiroon Historical Society. American History 101 is Ms. Scott's first exhibition that combines the two series together, exploring her own African American and Native American heritage through contemporary art.

The exhibition opens July 10th, from noon to 5 pm. American History 101 will also be part of the Miracle Mile Art Walk, to be held on Saturday, July 17th from 6 pm to 10 pm. There will be a discussion with the artist at 7 pm.

A reception for the artist will also be held on Thursday, July 29th. Ms. Scott's exhibition narrates a mere chapter of who is as an African-Native American, and the journey she has taken to share this with us. From slavery, to the civil rights movement, to the election of President Obama, Ms. Scott's works of contemporary art express her desire to offer insights of the past and not only the value but the importance of understanding it.

Sophia Louisa Lee started Sophia Louisa Projects in October 2009 in conjunction with Phantom Galleries LA (PGLA) wherein she exclusively curates the exhibitions at 5412 Wilshire Blvd. PGLA places temporary art installations in vacant storefront windows throughout Los Angeles county. PGLA transforms unutilized space into 24/7 public art galleries.
